Only 2 days to go and then we are off to Poland to the Satyrykon Festival in Legnica. The director of The Legnica Cultural Centre, and Ela Pietrasko and her team of Satyrykon, invited us to show our exhibition ‘Trains and Stations’ in LOZA the Gallery of the Public Library of Legnica. This exhibition will be the first to open in this festival on Thursday the 31st of May 2012 at 19 h.
For our Cartoon contest we always choose a theme with a connection to our Village Boechout, so we had in the past themes like ‘Windmill’ – we have a windmill in Boechout , security – because there was a factory of safety articles, horticulture – there are a lot of greenhouses in our village, and so on.
For this contest we choose ‘trains and stations’ because in 1835 the first Railway Line was introduced in Belgium. Last year Belgium celebrated 175 years of railways. The first 3 trains had names, they were “The Arrow” (de pijl), “The Stephenson” and “The Elephant” (de olifant). So Belgium was the first country on the European mainland to build a railway and introduced in 1892 the international standard-time, the so called Greenwich Mean Time or Rail Time. Thanks to the train it was noon at the same time throughout Belgium.
We also choose this theme ‘Trains and Stations’ for our cartoon contest because in Boechout our old station of the type 1893 was desolate and awaits a new purpose. The whole neighbourhood around our station: streets, parking … needs renovation. And as a kind of miracle, is it because of this exhibition about “trains and stations”, everything is moving and this year our village started road-works around the station, renovating the parking space and even building a new cycling –track to connect Boechout for bicycles with 2 other towns.Maybe it is true what they say that “Humour can save the world”. We are very happy with this evolution because stations are centres of activity and social life, places to meet. Stations and trains are a matter of motion, motion into the future…
Satyrykon shows also the exhibition of her competition 2012 and at the same time and exhibition of 35 years of Satyrykon which opens on the 1st of June at 17 h.in the Copper Muzeum. Before this opening the memory plates of Jan Kaczmarek en Eugeniusz Get Stankiewicz will be revealed in the main street of Legnica near the statue of the Satyrykon Knave ‘Filip’.
At 18.30 h. there will be the opening of the exhibition of Eryk Lipinski (founder of the Karykatury Museum in Warschau) and his collection in the Ring Gallery and at 19 h. the opening of an exhibition of the works of Grzegorz Szumowski, probably the best caricaturist of Poland.Saterday the 2nd of June Michel Granger (F) shows his painting exhibition ‘Oppresssion’ in the Copper Museum, opening at 17 h. and at 18 h. is the opening of the exhibition of the Gdansk Fine Arts Academy Students which has as title ‘Sharpness Leaning’.As you can see it’s quiet a strong program.
