Last week Dieter Burkamp passed away. His good friend Florian Doru Crihana wrote this in memoriam
Dieter Burkamp was born in 1940 in Oerlinghausen, Germany.
Between 1963 – 2001, he was editor at the Westfälische (Neuen Westfalischen) newspaper in Bielefeld and then the coordonating director of the newspaper. After this, he worked as an independant journalist for the West Germany Radio.
From 1970, Dieter worked hard in the cartoon branch.
Together with his wife, the art historian Gisela Burkamp, organized over a hundred exhibitions since 1980 in Germany and also in other countries. In 1989, Dieter Burkamp was member of the jury in the cartoon and satirical art contest, “Satyrykon”, from Legnica (Poland). The collaboration with the Festival lasted more than 10 years. He was also member of the jury in the cartoon contests in Anvers (Belgium), Surgut and Kaliningrad (Russia), Zemun (Serbia) and Germany. In 1993, Dieter Burkamp and Theodor Helmert Corvey, initiated the itinerant exhibition “Satyrykon – international cartoon”, which was presented in 18 towns from Renania North-Westfalia.
In 2000, he organised the cartoon contest “Herman the German” for celebrating 125 years from raising the Hermann monument, in Teutoburg Forest.
A year later, he and Walther Keim organized the itinerant exhibition „Nachbarn – Deutsche Karikaturisten sehen Polen, Polnische Karikaturisten sehen Deutschland“, which was presented in over 30 towns from Germany and Poland. In 2004, Dieter and Gisela started the „Zehn Neue für Europa“ project, to mark the accession of ten new EU countries. The exhibition was opened in the House of Representatives from Berlin and then, for 3 years went on tour in Germany, Belgium, Serbia, Romania, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland. In 2007, he organized with Branko Najhold the exhibition „His Master’s Line“, with works of over 75 years old European artists, still active. In 2011, he organized the European exhibition „Heimat” inside of „Oerlinghausen – the 975th anniversary” events.
In the mid of 80s, Dieter Burkamp established the „Edition Pro” Publishing within which, he published a lot of books.
He kept in touch with the great European cartoonists. Dieter Burkamp was a very good friend and dealt particularly with the artistic creation of Jerzy Panek, Walter Hanel, Fritz Wolf, Zygmunt Januszewski and Florian Doru Crihană. He organized exhibitions especially for them and has published their monographs.
