Thursday evening 17h30 I got a text message from my dad, who was in Poland: ‘I did miss a call. Can you please call this person back?’
So I did and I got Georg Kremer, civil servant of Eupen (city in the German speaking part of Belgium), on the phone. He wanted to invite us to the opening ceremony of the 6th Caricatura Festival in Kassel (Germany). There was just one little problem: it started the next day. If we could be in Eupen at 12h30 we could join the mini-bus travelling to Kassel.
‘Ok, if I call you back in an hour?’ , I said. After replacing a meeting and consulting my husband we decided to go!
So not prepared for this trip we took the train to Eupen and met Herr Kremer in front of the Town Hall in Eupen. There we discovered that the Belgian female cartoonists Cécile Bertrand (La Libre Belgique) and NETT (Grenz-Echo) will come with us too. So we formed a real Belgian delegation with people of the three different communities: Flemish, French and German speaking community. Representative for the country but not for the Belgian cartoon scene (too many women).
At about 17:00 we were in Kassel, we still had some time to refresh ourselves for the opening ceremony that should start at 19:30.
Caricatura is one of the most important events on humorous art in Germany. The first edition took place in 1987 and since then every 5 years a new ‘Caricatura’ is organized at the Caricatura – Galerie fur Komische Kunst at the KulturBahnhof in Kassel – directly among the route of dOCUMENTA.
For the first time the festival is going international with 107 cartoonists from 7 different countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, the Netherlands and Switzerland). Belgium is represented through the editorial cartoonists Cécile Bertrand, Cost, Kamagurka, Pierre Kroll, Marec, Karl Meersman, NETT, Nicolas Vadot, Zaza and ZAK. A pitty that we can not see the work of our great gag cartoonists at Caricatura.
The exhibition hall is overwhelming, nice presentation of the cartoons, installations, iDisplays and big enlargements makes it to an attractive exhibition. The organizers did select cartoonists and works from the current European humorous art scene including new trends and established masters – in a way that is surprising and unpolished, that knows no taboos.
A great exhibition catalogue is published and we had a great evening. An opening ceremony is always an opportunity to meet some great people from the international cartoon scene. So we returned with a lot of business cards, a few new Facebook friends and promises to stay in contact.
Before returning to the hotel we, as Belgians, did eat some French Fries at the Burger King next to the exhibition hall.
On our way back to Belgium Cecile Bertrand suggested to have a stop at the Museum Insel Hombroich, we had an amazing afternoon in a nice environment that combines well nature and culture.
Caricatura VI Kassel is running from June 2 through September 16 2012, at the same time dOCUMENTA is taken place.
