Saturday afternoon and we are driving through a great landscape to the touristic Luxemburg place of Vianden. We decided to stay over night this year, so we checked in at the great Hotel Belle Vue and decided to have a drink first in the sun.
After a walk uphill we arrived at the beautiful ‘Chateau’ a unique place to have a cartoon exhibition. It was all ready the 6th edition of the ‘Salon International de la caricature et du cartoon’ organized by Florin Balaban and his lovely wife Sandra.
The theme of this years edition was ‘the egg’, as we are from Kruishoutem, ones the biggest European Egg Market, the theme interested us in particular. ‘Chicken and Egg’ was the first theme of the Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem. So as experts in the theme we looked at the cartoons and found that cartoonists did approach the theme in a today perspective, although some ideas we’re also developed more then 30 years ago.
The president of the ‘Chateau’ did give us some insights in French proverbs about eggs and then the prize giving ceremony could take place:
Robert Rousso did win the first prize, second prize was for Andrei Popov and Valeriu Kurtu obtained the third prize. There were honorable mentions for Luc Vernimmen, Alessandro Gatto, Nikola Lites and Mohamed Reza Babaei.
You can see all winners at our website
Robert Rousso was very happy with his first prize: ‘It is a great honor for me that the jury has chosen my work above that of f.e. Kartu and Gatto’, he told the public.
Pol Leurs was president of the jury: ‘I really like to be a jury member’ he told me during the reception. Even if it is not an easy task to choose the winners out of 1165 cartoons, from 590 cartoonists out of 70 countries. A great difference with the 543 entries they had in the first edition. So keep up the good work, guys!
This years guest cartoonist was the Swedish Riber Hansson. I met Riber once before at the prize giving ceremony of the Press Cartoon Europe, that he won in 2009. But through Facebook it is as if I have known him for years. So it was great to meet him again together with his lovely wife.
However we had some conversation difficulties I was also very happy to meet Valeriu Kurtu for the first time in real life.
We ended the evening with a dinner at the grill restaurant. It was a great evening together with some great cartoonists and cartoon friends from over all Europe: Robert Rousso, Pol Leurs and Gabie, Florin and Sandra, Riber Hansson, Valeriu Kurtu and Jean-Marie et Marie-Claude Bertin.
The exhibition can be seen in the great ‘Chateau de Vianden’ till the 2nd of June.

And during the ‘Egg Festivities’ at Easter 2014 the exhibition of Vianden festival will be exposed in the European Cartoon Center. Something to look forward to.
And now I will enjoy the great exhibit catalogue.
See you next year!
