“Border” was the theme of this year’s online contest that was organized and conducted by the gallery KURTUKUNST in cooperation with the LIMES Image Agency. Valeriu Kurtu, Rais Khalilov, Paul Gross and Michael Rufman were delighted at the enthusiastic response to their competition: For this edition they received 1379 works by 603 artists from 80 different countries in the world. I also belonged to them and had the joy and honor to win the first prize which I received in the Schöneberg Town Hall on 7th June from the hands of Mr. Jean-Louis Thill, Deputy Ambassador of Luxembourg in Berlin. At the same place where John F. Kennedy spoke his famous words 50 years ago: “Ich bin ein Berliner.” At that time the Berlin Wall, a politically motivated, arbitrary border drawn through the middle of a city, devided streets, houses, cemeteries, and not least families and friends.
According to this year’s theme, cartoonists should wonder consciously whether they may exceed limits with their satirical works and injure people in their religious attitudes and feelings. Cartoons and caricatures shall always be a seismograph of our society but never the trigger of an earthquake.
The judging panel consisted of six persons, namely:
– Elzbieta Pietraszko (Poland, organizer of Satyrykon Legnica)
– Reiner Schwalme (Germany, cartoonist)
– Nazih Danyal (Turkey, cartoonist and chairman of the FECO Turkey)
– Patrick Pinter (France, cartoonist)
– Heinz Pfister (Switzerland, cartoonist and animation film maker)
– Mikhail Zlatkovsky (Russia, cartoonist).
The exhibition of selected works is held in the Schöneberg Town Hall until 27th June 2013.
The theme of the next edition of this contest will be: Electromobile.
