After two weeks of holidays in Portugal we collected our collegues from the European Cartoon Center at the airport of Porto. At the same time O-Sekoer and Angel Boligan, with his nice son David, arrived at the airport. All guests for the 15th edition of Portocartoon.
When we arrived at the hotel we met some other cartoonists as: Peter Nieuwendijck (who was president of the jury), Willem Rasing (3th prize winner), Miro Stefanovic (winner) and Alexandru Bartefeld (honourable mention). At 11 o’clock a press conference was organised, so all awarded cartoonists did attend this press conference. At the same time we discovered the beautiful city of Porto.
On Saturday we had a rather busy program: the Portocartoon team did organise a city tour by bus with a guide and so we had a quick view of all the highlights of Porto and we visited the Ramos Pinto Port Wine House (quiet a excentric man the founder Adriano and the port tasted well!).
In the afternoon Luis Humberto Marcos opened the ‘Portocartoon Street’ and all caricaturists did work for several hours, making of some of the most beautiful women of Portugal, a … caricature.
At 10 pm there was the opening ceremony of the exhibition of the Portugese Fernando Camarneiro, who did win the prize of the public in 2012. What a great idea to show cartoons in the shopping mall – it brings cartoons to the great public. It is nice to see that people, who will not enter a museum, stand still by the cartoons, laugh and go back shopping.
On Sunday is the big day. In the morning we inaugurate a small selection of the Brazilian Piracicaba cartoon contest and at 5 pm the official opening and prize distribution ceremony of Portocartoon takes place. After some speeches, all cartoonists and caricaturists did recieve their prizes (money and Port) and at least we could see the exhibition in the cellars of the museum.
Wow: in total more than 500 (well framed) works are shown at the festival: cartoons, caricatures and a small exhibition with the humor photos of my dear friend (who I have meet for the first time in real life during our stay in Porto) Francisco Punal Suarez.
Have a look at the Portocartoon website to see all winning cartoons/caricatures in the three categories.
And then it was time to take part in the important festivities of Sao Joao in Porto. With a hammer in our hand, we knocked all evil spirits out of the heads and watched an amazing fire work from the boat. And yes … we danced till late that night.
Thanks to Luis, Isabel and the whole Portocartoon team for the amazing organisation and the cartoonists/caricaturists/guests for the amazing time.
