Yesterday evening (Wednesday 2nd April 2014), a small delegation of the European Cartoon Centre (ECC) was invited to the Awards Ceremony of the cartoon contest ‘’50 Years in Belgium’’. This contest was an initiative of the Belgian-Turkish association for friendship (Beltud) in order to look back in a playful way on the theme of 50 years of migration of the Turkish and Moroccan communities into Belgium.
The contest resulted into a travelling exhibition throughout Belgium. The second stop of this exhibition ‘on tour’ and also the place of the Awards Ceremony is the prestigious entrance hall (Peristylium) of the Belgian Federal Parliament in Brussels.
After the speech of the president of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, Mr. André FLAHAUT, who by the way was an enthusiastic host for this event, the winners of the contest were announced.
The jury, composed of Marec, Canary Pete, Kim, Dubus, Vadot and Clou, all well-known names in the Belgian cartoon world, came up with this result :
– 1st prize : Mr. Ahmet AYKANAT, Turkey (1.000,00 €)
– 2nd prize : Mr. Agim SULAY, Italy (750,00 €)
– 3th prize : Mr. René BOUSCHET, France (500,00 €)
The first and second prize winners couldn’t make it to be present at the ceremony, so the president of the ECC, Mr. Rudy GHEYSENS and a team member of the ECC, Mr. Fernand VOGELS, volunteered to receive the awards from Ms Maggie DE BLOCK, Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum, Immigration and Social Integration and Ms Joëlle MILQUET, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior and for Equalities.
As none of the prize winners were Belgian cartoonists, a special prize was created to congratulate the best Belgian cartoonist : Mr. Luc VERNIMMEN (Antwerp) was delighted to receive this award (200,00 €).
As the evening went by, many guests among whom where cartoonists like Nikola HENDRICKX (IOA – Belgium) and Marco D’AGOSTINO (Italy), who specially came from Italy together with his sister Lucilla to this marvelous exhibition, enjoined the hospitality of the team of Beltud. That’s why the ECC would like to thank a thousand times Mrs. Seval KAYMAN, president of Beltud, for his invitation and cooperation.
The show will travel to different places in Brussels, Antwerp, Gent, Leuven, Hasselt and Genk. More information on the exhibition can be found on :
