Every year one of the members of the ECC-team do organize a surprise trip for the other members.
Often the trip is a combination of culture, leisure and eating, … . This year Jan and Véronique were the organizers and it must be said, we did not have any clue where they would take is this time.
They did let us know that we did need our German dictionary, but as they are more in to the ‘French Culture’ we thought that this could be an option: Normandie, Champagne, … .
But no, they brought us to the Flemish part of France… not so far from Kruishoutem, but a real discovery for most of us.
We started with a visit of the little town of Cassel – where Nathalie showed us around. After a great lunch we went to a tyical Brewery and had a fantastic boat trip on the ‘Marais’ with its typical live style, the cultivation of vegetables and some wild life.
Then of to the hotel in ‘Bailleul’, where we also had a nice evening together. During our late evening drink in a local pub we met ‘Jean – le combattant’, the war veteran of the secund world war. We did forget that elder people in this part of France do speak and understand a similar Flemish languages as ours … so it gave some surprises.
The second day we had a cultural day that should bring some inspiration for our exhibition ‘Humour As Weapon – cartoons in the Great War’. We started the day with a visit to the Louvre Lens – with a fantastic exhibition about wars in general (starting Napoleon time – till now), with classic and modern art. Impressive.
Later on we went to Arras and its surroundings where we were confronted by the reallity of the Great War.
The most surprising moment of the day was our diner – a BBQ – at Jan and Veroniques place. And every cartoonist who did allready stayed in Kruishoutem knows that they are the best hosts ever!
Thanks for these great moments to everyone!
