It is a sunny Sunday morning and we decided to go on a cartoon trip to Overijse (Belgium). It is the last day of the exhibition of the ‘Cartoon/caricature Bottles’ of Gal, and we really wanted to see this.
GAL or Gerard Alsteens (1940) is one of Belgians most important political cartoonists and graphic designers. Gal is not a traditional humor cartoonist, but with his sharp political art works he likes to share his own point of view on the political news.
With the exhibition ‘Gal op Flessen’ he painted and crafted simple bottles into national and international celebrities. So you can see our own King Filip and Queen Mathilde, the Dutch Queen Beatrix, Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Poetin, Pope Franciscus, Berlusconi, etc…
The figures are not only 3D caricatures but in every art piece you can find a little humor twist referring to a scandal or a news item about the celebrity. The works were located in the cultural house of Overijse and at several shops in the city center.
It is a rather small exhibition but it really shows the genius of Gal as a cartoon master.
And these works are a small tribute to our Belgian surrealist Magritte who also painted on bottles.
Just have a look at this video broadcasted at Ring TV (it’s only in Dutch):
The exhibition is traveling around Belgian cities at the moment – so if you have the possibility please go and see it.
